Henry Birthday Jupiter is a versatile creative human based in Portland, Oregon, known for diverse talents across multiple fields. As a tattoo artist, Henry has developed a unique style, blending bold, intricate designs with personal storytelling, which has garnered a loyal clientele. These tattoos often reflect deep symbolism and an attention to detail that make each piece a distinct work of art.
In addition to his tattooing, Henry is also a producer and director, working on various multimedia projects that showcase a visionary approach to storytelling. Welcome is a short film that follows the birth of aliens into girl bodies and a ritualized first day on Earth. Henry’s projects often weave in themes of identity, gender, culture, and surrealism. Personal experience in these roles allows him to oversee projects from concept to completion, ensuring that his artistic voice remains consistent throughout.
WELCOME’s visual world and narrative was unfolding over 2 years, and as it crystallized, WELCOME became an experience of personal and community healing that we hope to share with a large audience. By drawing from our individual practices while holding space for freedom to explore outside of them, we birthed WELCOME as a visual narrative of ritualized human experience and femininity.
WELCOME tells the story of a group of 6 alien visitors (played by CalArts dance and acting students) as they arrive on Earth with the wish to experience girlhood in human bodies. A human government worker welcomes these visitors as their “mama,” guiding them through a ritualized experience of girlhood. WELCOME is about the discovery of a new world as these visitors explore their own bodies through play and movement. The world of WELCOME is based upon personal unfamiliarity on earth, and the film seeks to create a space of harmonized belonging within our bodies and on this planet.
As a costume designer, Henry’s work has been featured in local theater productions, independent films, and performance art. His designs are known for their imaginative use of materials and their ability to enhance the narrative through visual expression. His ability to blend historical and avant-garde influences results in memorable, one-of-a-kind costumes that often push the boundaries of traditional design.
